Money Magazine voted Fort Lauderdale the best big place to live in America in 1996,
which did not surprise the 1.3 million inhabitants of the city and its neighboring
municipalities who comprise Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County for the 6.2 million
non- residents who came from all over North and South America, Europe and Asia last year
for fun or business. The fact is all of Greater Fort Lauderdale is a terrific place to
visit because it is a great place to live.
So what do the residents and loyal visitors of Florida's fastest growing, most diverse and
dynamic vacation and business travel destination know that the rest of the world should
find out?
For starters there are 23 miles of wide sandy beaches stretching enticingly along calm,
azure Atlantic waters --- from Palm Beach in the north to Miami in the south. More than
300 miles of navigable inland waterways, wind through palatial estates, citrus groves and
the unique and exotic Everglades --- beckoning boats of all sizes and shapes. It is the
Intracoastal Waterway and the waterfront homes which dot it, that have earned Greater Fort
Lauderdale its reputation as the "Venice of America" and, with more than 42,000
registered boats, the label "yachting-capital-of-the-world." Then there are the
cultural attractions, museums, sports, sailing and Scuba, dining, entertainment, shopping,
natural wonders, festivals and celebrations, friendly folk, cruise ships, water taxis,
horse-drawn carriages, butterflies, alligators.....
This is Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County: An area covering 1,197 square miles ---
two thirds of which lie in the Everglades, also known as the "river of grass"
--- of diverse attractions and activities on and off the beach. It's no wonder that
sun-seekers from all over the world come here to play, relax, and, sometimes, even work.
It's also no wonder that Broward County is one of the fastest growing residential areas in
the country.
Part of the reason is accessibility. Greater Fort Lauderdale is easy to reach by air,
train or interstate highway. The newly expanded Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International
Airport is one of the most efficient in the world, served by more than 40 carriers from
most air-departure points across the U.S. and Canada. With three airports to select from
in South Florida, the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International facility is fast becoming
the number one choice with visitors who want to avoid overcrowding, long lines, confusion
and miles of corridors. The airport's location makes it easy to land, collect luggage,
rent a car and be at the beach, board a cruise ship or make a meeting at the Convention
Center in minutes after arrival.
